A massive, mutated sea creature emerges as a terrifying symbol of nuclear destruction.

The story

In 1954, following the destruction of several ships near Odo Island, a mysterious threat is suspected to be lurking in the sea. When a massive storm strikes the island, a giant monster appears, causing significant destruction to local property and life. As the news of the devastation reaches the capital, the Japanese government and scientific community must grapple with the reality of a mutated, radioactive creature. Amidst the growing panic, experts and officials debate how to respond to the threat while the public remains in a state of uncertainty regarding the nature of the beast and the danger it poses to the nation.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After the destruction of several ships near Odo Island, a massive monster known as Godzilla is identified as a mutated creature resulting from underwater hydrogen bomb testing. A paleontologist, Kyohei Yamane, identifies the creature as a terrestrial evolution of an ancient sea beast. While the government debates whether to inform the public, the monster surfaces and attacks Tokyo, causing widespread destruction and radiation sickness among survivors. Amidst the chaos, a scientist named Daisuke Serizawa develops a secret weapon called the 'Oxygen Destroyer' capable of disintegrating organic matter. Despite initial hesitation due to the potential for the weapon to be weaponized by superpowers, Serizawa eventually agrees to use it. In a final desperate move, Serizawa and a sailor named Hideto Ogata deploy the device in Tokyo Bay. The Oxygen Destroyer successfully destroys Godzilla, but Serizawa is killed in the process. Yamane warns that as long as nuclear testing continues, other monsters may rise.
