A yakuza boss’s wife faces a territorial incursion, a fatal attack within her organization, and her husband’s enormous debt to a rival gang.

The story

During the bubble economy, rising land prices draw a development company onto the Osaka territory of the Shigemune-gumi. Soon after Yuki, wife of the group’s boss Takaaki, learns the company is a front, Takaaki and a senior member are attacked; the senior member is killed. Takaaki suspects the Bandai-gumi, but Yuki later learns that a gang under its umbrella carried out the encroachment and attack. She also discovers that Takaaki owes Bandai-gumi 200 million yen, and that the Shigemune-gumi’s assets may have to be sold if he cannot repay it.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

As land prices in the territory of the Osaka-based yakuza organization Shigemune-gumi soar during the bubble economy, a development company begins encroaching on its turf. One day, shortly after a member tells Yuki (Yukiyo Toake), wife of Shigemune-gumi boss Takaaki (Takuya Fujioka), that the development company is a front, her husband and one of the group’s senior members are attacked in separate locations. Takaaki survives, but the senior member is killed. From his hospital bed, Takaaki tells Yuki, “Bandai-gumi must be behind the development company.” Later, it emerges that the attack on Takaaki was caused by a lovers’ quarrel with his mistress. After attending the trial, Yuki loses all respect for her husband when she sees him defending his mistress. Yuki meets Iwaki (Shigeru Kamiyama), the underboss of Bandai-gumi, and learns that the encroachment on Shigemune-gumi’s turf and the attack on its senior member had been carried out by a gang under Bandai-gumi. Just after Yuki demands that he make amends, Iwaki tells her that Takaaki owes Bandai-gumi a staggering 200 million yen. He says that if the debt cannot be repaid, Shigemune-gumi’s assets must be sold. To raise money, Yuki visits an acquaintance who is a moneylender in Tokushima Prefecture and borrows several million yen to tide her over. The moneylender introduces her to Ryoji Kimoto (Hiroaki Murakami), a former Bandai-gumi yakuza. Yuki grows fond of him and finds comfort in his arms. Several years earlier, Kimoto had been expelled from the gang after causing an incident. While he was serving time, his girlfriend, Asami Enoki (Rino Katase), unilaterally broke up with him, and after his release he became a professional gambler. After leaving Tokushima, Kimoto visits Asami’s apartment and asks to live there with her and her daughter, but Asami, who wants a peaceful life, turns him down. Kimoto keeps asking her to get back together, and she continues to refuse. One day, Yuki witnesses the two of them together and visits Asami’s apartment. Yuki tells Asami that she will take Kimoto in at Shigemune-gumi. Asami tells her she plans to marry another man, and Yuki accepts this. After Kimoto comes under Shigemune-gumi’s care, Yuki receives an invitation to Iwaki’s succession ceremony, to be held the following spring, where he will be inaugurated as the fifth head of Bandai-gumi. Learning that a gambling tournament will take place at the ceremony, Yuki comes up with a plan to give Iwaki a nasty surprise, with the help of Kimoto, the gambler. The plan requires a large bankroll, so Yuki and Kimoto use the several million yen as their stake and visit gambling dens around the country, building up their funds over several months. Around this time, the man Asami planned to marry betrays her. She considers getting back together with Kimoto, but hesitates as she remembers how he had put her through turmoil in the past. On the day of the succession ceremony, Yuki goes to greet Iwaki and tells him that Kimoto is taking part in the tournament. She follows the astonished Iwaki into the hall. Iwaki spots Kimoto preparing for a high-stakes game of Tehonbiki, but with so many guests watching, he can only look on. Kimoto wins the game and walks away with several hundred million yen. A few days later, certain of her love for Kimoto, Asami decides to start over with him and her daughter. She tells him how she feels, and the two share a passionate embrace. Yuki visits Bandai-gumi’s office to repay Takaaki’s debt. After thrusting the 200 million yen in cash back at Iwaki, she gives him a piece of her mind and walks away.
