Two private investigators in Boston hunt for a young girl abducted from her mother's apartment.

The story

In mid-June 2006, in Dorchester, Boston, private investigators Patrick Kenzie and Angie Gennaro are hired by the aunt and uncle of a four-year-old girl, Amanda, who was abducted from her mother's apartment. Amidst a media frenzy, the pair must navigate a complex web of local drug lords, desperate parents, and police involvement to find the missing child. The investigation leads them into a dangerous underworld where the line between the truth and the danger of the streets becomes increasingly blurred as they race against time to locate the girl and ensure her safety.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After being hired by the girl's relatives, Patrick and Angie discover that the girl's mother is involved with a local drug lord named Cheese. They learn that a ransom exchange at a quarry goes wrong, leading to the belief that the girl drowned. However, the investigation continues when a second child is abducted, leading Patrick to a house where he finds a child and a suspect. Later, Patrick discovers that a police officer, Remy, was involved in a staged kidnapping to protect drug money. Ultimately, Patrick discovers that the girl was never in the quarry but was being hidden by a police captain, Jack Doyle, who believed she would have a better life with him than with her mother. Patrick faces a moral dilemma: return the girl to her mother or let her stay with the man who 'saved' her. He chooses to return her, leading to the arrest of Doyle and his accomplices, and the end of his relationship with Angie.
