A man becomes the prime suspect after his wife goes missing, leading to a complex web of media scrutiny and personal secrets.

The story

On their fifth anniversary, writing teacher Nick Dunne returns home to find his wife, Amy, missing. Amy's fame as the inspiration for her parents' children's books ensures widespread press coverage, and the media finds Nick's apathy toward her disappearance suspicious. Before she vanished, the couple's marriage had deteriorated following job losses and a move to Missouri. As the investigation begins, Detective Rhonda Boney and her team uncover evidence of a struggle and financial troubles. Meanwhile, Nick discovers a series of clues and items that suggest Amy's disappearance was not what it seemed, while the media intensifies its scrutiny of his role in her disappearance.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After Amy disappears, Nick Dunne is scrutinized by a media frenzy. The investigation reveals a crumbling marriage, an affair between Nick and a student, and a series of elaborate clues left by Amy. It is revealed that Amy orchestrated a complex plot to frame Nick for her murder, including faking a pregnancy and staging a crime scene. She hid in a nearby campground, while Nick eventually discovered her scheme. After a series of legal maneuvers and a public media strategy, Nick was cleared of suspicion when Amy staged a kidnapping by a man named Desi. She returned home, and the couple eventually reconciled. The film ends with them announcing a pregnancy on television, with Nick choosing to stay with her despite the truth of her actions.
