A married couple abducts a young delinquent and attempts to rehabilitate him through a series of unconventional methods.
The story
19-year-old Tommy is a foul-mouthed, drug-abusing delinquent who is abducted on the street by an unknown assailant. He is taken to the large countryside home of a man named Chris and his wife, Kathryn. Rina, a woman seeking work as a housekeeper, discovers Tommy chained in the cellar and is forced to stay under threat of deportation. Chris claims he is trying to help Tommy become a better person through education and kindness, despite the reality of Tommy's captivity. As time passes, Tommy begins to form bonds with the family, while the true nature of his situation and the motives behind his abduction remain shrouded in mystery.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Tommy, a delinquent, is abducted and held by Chris and Kathryn in a Yorkshire home. While Rina, a housekeeper, is held there under duress, she watches as Chris uses a mix of kindness and physical discipline to 'rehabilitate' Tommy. Over time, Tommy's demeanor softens, and he forms a bond with the family's son, Jonathan. The tension peaks when Rina's family invades the house; she provides Tommy with the code to his locks before fleeing with them. Later, after Chris believes Tommy is safe, Tommy escapes his restraints and confronts Chris. During the confrontation, Kathryn mistakenly calls him 'Sparkle,' implying he was a replacement for a deceased child. Heartbroken, she allows him to leave. Tommy returns to his life, eventually finding his girlfriend, Gabby. After she expresses a desire to disappear, he sedates her and brings her to the gate of Chris's home, suggesting a cycle of abduction or a shared fate.
