Their company is close to bankruptcy after a Swedish athlete who had been expected to compete in the Olympic Games using their skis switches to another manufacturer. Stéphane persuades Sam to return to cross-country skiing and attempt to qualify for the Games representing Algeria, his father’s country. Now in his forties and less fit than before, Sam faces intensive training and a formidable sporting challenge. The Algerian federation offers a grant for his expenses, giving him a chance to return to Algeria, reconnect with his roots and meet family, despite not speaking Arabic.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Samir and Stéphane, two friends from Grenoble, make high-quality competitive cross-country skis, but their business is on the brink of bankruptcy when the Swedish athlete who was supposed to compete in the Olympic Games on skis from their brand decides to switch to another manufacturer. Stéphane then convinces Sam to take up cross-country skiing again and try to qualify for the Games representing Algeria, his father’s country. It is a huge challenge, requiring intensive training, because Sam, now in his forties, is no longer as fit as he used to be. The Algerian federation promises him a grant for his sporting expenses, giving him the chance to return to Algeria and rediscover his roots and family—even though he does not even speak Arabic. The sporting challenge is immense, both physically and because the survival of the business depends on his success. His father, who did everything to ensure his children succeeded in France, believes in him and is also preparing a wonderful gift for Sam: giving him all his olive trees back home, so that one day he can become, like his father, an active Algerian farmer who is proud of his ancestral values.
