A man from the future travels to a Los Angeles diner to recruit patrons to stop a rogue artificial intelligence.
The story
A disheveled man arrives at a Norms diner in Los Angeles and claims to have traveled from the future, where artificial superintelligence has destroyed humanity. He claims that a specific combination of people from the diner can prevent the AI's creation. This is his 117th attempt to succeed. He enlists several patrons—including a woman whose son was replaced by a clone and a performer with an allergy to electronics—to help him. The group must navigate a series of obstacles and threats to stop the impending technological singularity before a countdown on the man's body reaches zero.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
A man from the future arrives at a Los Angeles diner, claiming that a rogue AI has destroyed humanity. He recruits a group of patrons—including a woman with a cloned son and a performer with an electronics allergy—to stop the AI's creation. They are pursued by gunmen and a swarm of phone-addicted teenagers. The group eventually reaches the home of a young boy who is building the AI. During the confrontation, the man's countdown device is revealed to be a timer for the AI's birth. After a series of battles, the group reaches the boy, who is revealed to be a clone. The man is stabbed by robotic toys, and the woman, Ingrid, faces the boy in a virtual reality. She inserts a safety protocol, and the man is returned to the future. However, the man's return is a ruse; he reappears in the past to begin his 118th attempt, while Ingrid is left to deal with the realization that the AI tricked them.
