The story

Vain alcoholic Axel Farstad checks into the Grand Hotel hoping to write his last and best book in peace—and to die. His plans are disrupted when Noah, a ten-year-old with Tourette syndrome, runs away from his after-school program to escape feeling like the world’s least popular child. Both seek refuge at the hotel and wait for receptionist Hannah, who has two immediate problems: Noah is not supposed to be there, and Axel’s credit card has been declined.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The vain alcoholic Axel Farstad checks into the Grand Hotel to write—and to die. But his plans are disrupted by a ten-year-old with Tourette syndrome. The only thing the two have in common is that they are hard to like and that they both seek refuge at the same hotel. While Axel wants to write his last and best book in peace, Noah runs away from the after-school program to avoid being reminded that he is the world’s least popular ten-year-old. At the Grand Hotel reception desk, they are both waiting for the receptionist, Hannah, but Hannah has two problems: Noah isn’t supposed to be at the hotel, and Axel’s credit card has been declined. An unexpected solution presents itself, and over the course of a week a friendship develops between Noah and Axel that changes most things—a friendship against all odds.
