Five years after a catastrophic comet impact, a family must navigate a crumbling world to reach a rumored sanctuary.

The story

Five years after the impact of interstellar comet Clarke destroyed civilization and most life on Earth, the environment is chaotic, with sudden electromagnetic storms, lingering radioactive fallout, deorbiting fragments of Clarke's debris ring, and tectonic earthquakes from the impact. The Garrity family lives in an underground bunker near Thule Air Base in Greenland. When an earthquake collapses their bunker, they are forced into an emergency evacuation. Most survivors are killed by a tsunami, and the facility is destroyed. The remaining survivors, including the Garritys, must navigate a devastated landscape to find safety, facing various hazards and other survivors in a desperate journey toward a rumored sanctuary.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Five years after the impact of interstellar comet Clarke destroyed civilization, the Garrity family lives in a bunker in Greenland. An earthquake forces them to flee, and they join other survivors on a lifeboat to reach Liverpool. During the journey, several companions are killed by soldiers, storms, and debris. The survivors reach London, where Allison learns John is dying from radiation. They decide to travel toward a rumored sanctuary in southern France. After crossing a desolate English Channel, they join a French family and travel toward the impact crater. They reach the crater, which is a lush, safe zone protected by the military. John dies from his wounds just as they reach the sanctuary, ensuring the safety of his family.
