A cynical weatherman becomes trapped in a time loop, forced to relive the same day repeatedly while covering a local festival.

The story

On February 1, cynical television weatherman Phil Connors travels to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. He expresses deep contempt for the assignment and the small town. On February 2, a blizzard strikes, trapping him in the town. The following morning, Phil awakens to the exact same circumstances, realizing he is trapped in a time loop where he relives the same day repeatedly. As he struggles to understand his situation, he must navigate the repetitive events and the fact that no one else is aware of the loop, while attempting to find a way to break free from the cycle.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Phil Connors, a cynical weatherman, finds himself trapped in a time loop on February 2 in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Initially, he uses the lack of consequences to indulge in reckless behavior, including binge eating and attempting to seduce his producer, Rita Hanson. However, as the days—or rather, the same day—pass, he becomes depressed and tries various ways to end his life, only to wake up again on February 2. Eventually, he decides to use the loop to improve himself, learning skills like playing the piano and speaking French, while helping the local residents. He eventually forms a genuine connection with Rita. In the final loop, he performs a series of selfless acts and a masterful report on the festivities. After a sincere moment with Rita, he wakes up on February 3, finally breaking the cycle and deciding to stay in Punxsutawney with her.
