Full plot (contains spoilers)
After being abducted from Earth as a child, Peter Quill finds himself in 2014 on the planet Morag, where he steals a mysterious Orb. He is pursued by the Ravagers and the Kree renegade Ronan the Accuser, who seeks the Orb for its immense power. During a chaotic escape, Quill teams up with a group of outcasts: the warrior Gamora, the raccoon Rocket, the tree-like Groot, and the warrior Drax the Destroyer. They are imprisoned in the Kyln but manage to escape together. The group travels to Knowhere, where the Orb is revealed to contain an Infinity Stone. Following a series of skirmishes and a desperate flight through space, the group eventually joins forces with the Nova Corps to confront Ronan on the planet Xandar. After a fierce battle where the group faces Ronan's overwhelming power, they manage to destroy his weapon and the Stone's immediate threat. Quill's group, now known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, have their records expunged, and Quill discovers his true heritage as a half-human, half-alien. The film ends with the Guardians departing in the Milano, with a new sapling of Groot growing in a pot.
