Full plot (contains spoilers)

Parker Wilson, a professor, adopts an abandoned Akita named Hachi. They develop a routine where Hachi waits for Parker at a train station every day. After Parker's daughter, Andy, marries and becomes pregnant, Hachi becomes a fixture in the family's life. One day, Hachi fetches a ball for the first time before Parker suffers a fatal stroke. While the family mourns, Hachi continues to wait at the station. After the family moves, Hachi is taken in by Andy and Michael, but he eventually returns to the station to wait for Parker. He becomes a local celebrity, and his devotion is documented by a reporter. Years later, even as an old dog, Hachi is still seen waiting at the station. He eventually passes away at the station, still waiting for his friend. The story concludes with a young boy, Ronnie, learning about the meaning of loyalty from his grandfather's story of Hachi.
