The story

Artist Caesar, a talented juggler whose career has stalled, leaves Berlin for the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad. He hopes to meet Willard, an American variety-show impresario on vacation, and secure a contract that could take him across the Atlantic. Caesar believes he has found the influential showman, but mistakes him for Mr. Lehmann. Trying to impress his supposed connection with sleight of hand, Caesar also makes a bold pass at Lehmann’s young, attractive daughter. Meanwhile, he fails to notice that Rosl Svoboda, his landlady’s daughter, has developed feelings for him.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Artist Caesar has seen better days. The talented juggler is having trouble finding another engagement, so he travels from Berlin to the Bohemian spa town of Karlsbad, where he intends to meet Willard, an American variety-show impresario who is supposedly taking a restorative vacation there. Caesar wants to ingratiate himself with the all-powerful showman so that he can arrange a contract for him on the other side of the Atlantic. But when Caesar thinks he has met Willard, he mistakes him for a certain Mr. Lehmann—and is also rather brazenly making a pass at his equally pretty and young daughter. Caesar leaves no trick untried in his efforts to impress Willard/Lehmann with his sleight of hand. As a result, the young performer fails to notice that his landlady’s daughter, Rosl Svoboda, has long since taken a liking to him. Then, when a hotel fire breaks out, everything is thrown into confusion. But once the smoke has cleared, Caesar sees things much more clearly and, for all his efforts, gets both a contract and a new bride.
