A college student must navigate a complex time loop involving a quantum reactor and a masked killer in a different iteration of his world.

The story

One day after the events of Happy Death Day, college student Ryan Phan wakes up in his car on September 19. After returning to his dorm, he encounters his roommate Carter and Carter's girlfriend, Tree. Ryan resumes work on an experimental quantum reactor with students Samar and Dre to slow down time. However, after the project is shut down for causing power outages, Ryan is murdered by someone dressed as the school mascot, Babyface, and wakes up again on the 19th. Tree explains her own experience reliving September 18th, and she and Carter agree to help Ryan investigate the reactor's role in the loop.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

After Ryan is murdered by a killer dressed as Babyface, Tree and Carter help him realize that an experimental quantum reactor created the time loop. The masked killer is revealed to be another Ryan from a different reality who insists the original must die to close the loop. Ryan activates the reactor, releasing an energy pulse that sends Tree into her original time loop, but in a reality where Carter is dating someone else. Tree discovers her mother is alive in this reality and wants to stay, but she must intervene to stop a serial killer, John Tombs. After several deaths and restarts, Tree and her team test algorithms to escape. Tree eventually discovers that the second Babyface is Gregory, who is trying to hide an affair with Lori. After a final confrontation where Tree kills Gregory, the reactor activates, sending her back to her original dimension. The film ends with the group being taken to a DARPA laboratory where Tree volunteers a new subject.
