Horrified, Van Dorn takes matters into his own hands, plunging into the city's seedy underbelly. In December 1977, Jake Van Dorn, a devout Calvinist businessman from Michigan, faces a nightmare when his teenage daughter, Kristen, vanishes during a church trip to California. After receiving evidence of her involvement in pornography, Van Dorn travels to Los Angeles. Disgusted by a private investigator's lack of focus, he takes charge, posing as a producer to find informants. He meets 'Jism Jim,' who leads him to Niki, a prostitute who agrees to guide him through the porn circuit. As they travel from Los Angeles to San Diego and San Francisco, their ideological divide narrows as they bond over personal failings. In San Francisco, Niki connects Van Dorn to a dealer linked to Ratan, a sadistic pornographer rumored to produce snuff films. After viewing a gruesome film, Van Dorn tracks Ratan to a nightclub. A brawl ensues, and Ratan is eventually shot and killed by the private investigator. Van Dorn finds Kristen in the club's basement; she reveals she fled voluntarily to escape her stifling upbringing. After a tearful plea for reconciliation, she agrees to return home. As they leave, Van Dorn spots Niki, but their bond is severed as she disappears into the shadows.
