After a heart attack, an absentee father returns home and tries to reconnect with the family he left behind.

The story

Photographer Harry Wegener returns to his hometown of Potsdam after a heart attack, having spent many years working abroad. His soon-to-be-ex-wife Katharina and eldest daughter Julia are deeply unreceptive: Harry left them 15 years earlier to pursue his ambitions and avoid family responsibilities. His youngest daughter, Fritzi, and mother-in-law Sophie are more welcoming, helping him gain a place in the family home. As daily life resumes, Harry’s impulsive antics and clumsiness repeatedly cause trouble. Katharina and Julia’s patience wears thin, and they begin to consider how to get him to leave, while Harry’s health and his complicated place in the family remain pressing concerns.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Photographer Harry Wegener had worked abroad for many years. After suffering a heart attack, he returns to his German hometown of Potsdam, where his soon-to-be-ex-wife Katharina and eldest daughter Julia do not exactly welcome him with open arms. Understandably so, since Harry left his young family 15 years earlier to pursue his ambitions and avoid having to take responsibility for his wife and child. His youngest daughter, Fritzi, and his mother-in-law, Sophie, however, seem pleased to see the photographer, whose health is poor, return. It is thanks to them that Katharina and Julia let him into their house at all. After the first difficult days, when Harry is made to feel Katharina and Julia’s rejection in no uncertain terms, everyday life in the Wegener household settles down. However, Harry is immensely irritating with his impulsive antics and clumsiness. Something is constantly getting broken, or he sets off the smoke alarm. An impromptu party with elderly women from the neighborhood does not meet with Katharina’s approval either, and ends with the fire department being called when a fire starts in the kitchen due to Harry’s carelessness. Katharina and Julia decide: Harry has to go! They ask Fritzi to persuade him to go into rehab. However, Harry unexpectedly suffers a minor heart attack, making Katharina realize that she likes him more than she wants to admit. Julia, though, has not let go of her hostility and makes sure her father feels it every day. Since she is a physical therapist, she puts him through a private rehabilitation program, as he vehemently refuses to undergo medical rehabilitation. A short time later, he tries to help his mother-in-law repair her broken stair lift—with chaotic results. To make amends, Harry arranges a date for Julia with a young man whom he thinks Julia likes and who, in his view, seems too shy to make a move himself. But this plan also backfires, and Julia is annoyed by the interference in her private life. Despite all the chaos Harry causes, he gradually grows closer to Katharina, and they talk a lot about the old days and the happy times they shared. Just when he thinks their marriage might work out again, he learns that Katharina has prepared the divorce papers. Without a word, he leaves the house and finally accepts his doctor’s offer of rehab. Without Harry, the Wegener household is now eerily quiet. Katharina and Julia try to distract themselves rather than admit that they miss him. While Katharina bakes cookies incessantly, Julia finally goes on a date with the young man. In the end, Katharina tears up the divorce papers, drives to Harry at the rehab center, and brings him home. So they do not lose each other again, the two of them take a trip together into the African wilderness.
