Shu plans to attend Waseda University, while Hiro is going to the fictional Sapporo Welfare University; he has been unable to tell her about his plans. When Hiro reacts to the fact that he is going to Tokyo, she is angry that he asked her out without telling her and refuses to contact him. The mismatch between their university plans and Shu’s silence becomes the first strain between them.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Hiro (Kii Kitano), a third-year high school student in Otaru, is asked out by Shu (Masaki Okada), the boy she has long had a crush on. Shu plans to attend Waseda University, but he has been unable to tell Hiro, who is going to Sapporo Welfare University (fictional). Hiro gets angry and refuses to contact him: “Why didn’t you tell me? What did you think you were doing, asking me out when you’re going to Tokyo?” When Hiro hears that Shu has talked to their homeroom teacher, Takanashi (Hiroki Narimiya), and decided not to go to Waseda, she is overjoyed. But when she talks it over with Hirabayashi (Takao Osawa), her calligraphy teacher, in the calligraphy room, he tells her things like, “Men think on impulse,” “It’s only a short time when you look at it over a whole lifetime,” and “Shibuya is full of demons, but it would be better for him to say he wants to protect you after he’s experienced all kinds of things in Tokyo.” Hiro takes Shu to their homeroom teacher and bows her head, asking him to let Shu go to Waseda. Though bewildered, Shu realizes how he truly feels. They decide to part, and after school, Hiro cries out loud on the school grounds…
