Their third encounter is at the Heartbreak Hotel nightclub, where they take their repeated meetings as a reason to become friends. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Elisabeth, a lively gynecologist, and Gudrun, a standoffish parking attendant, first meet during an argument over a parking ticket Gudrun has issued, which devolves into insults. The second time, Gudrun visits Elisabeth at her practice for an examination. They meet for the third time at the “Heartbreak Hotel” nightclub and take this series of encounters as a reason to become friends. They are in similar stages of life: both their marriages have ended, they are over 40, and have grown-up children. But they have completely different temperaments: while Gudrun prefers to stay at home, Elisabeth goes out looking for men. They share several nights of dancing, a disastrous blind date, and Gudrun’s first orgasm. Suddenly, Gudrun’s ex-husband Åke reappears—a man she had led Elisabeth to believe was dead. Gudrun is torn between her friendship with Elisabeth and her desire to make a fresh start with Åke. At first, she tries to hide this inner conflict from Elisabeth. When Elisabeth finds out about Åke, Gudrun chooses to give up their nights out at the disco and talks only about marrying Åke again. To top it all off, it turns out that Elisabeth’s ex-husband is having a child with his young lover, whom he had played down as insignificant. In the end, however, Gudrun decides to go on vacation with Elisabeth after all, and calls off her wedding.
