The story
In 1890, the Wyoming territory becomes a battleground for land and survival. Jim Averill, a local marshal, finds himself caught between the interests of the wealthy Wyoming Stock Growers Association and a growing population of poor European immigrants. As the tension between the established cattle barons and the newcomers escalates into a violent dispute over land and livestock, Averill must navigate a landscape of escalating hostility. The film explores the cultural clash and the desperate measures taken by both sides as they fight for their place in the American West.

In 1870, Jim Averill and Billy Irvine graduate from Harvard. By 1890, Averill is a marshal in Wyoming. He encounters the conflict between the Wyoming Stock Growers Association, led by Frank Canton, and poor European immigrants. After learning of the Association's plan to eliminate the settlers, Averill warns them. A series of violent incidents occurs, including the slaughter of workers at a bordello run by Ellen Watson. Amidst the chaos, a large gathering at 'Heaven's Gate' becomes a site of tension. The settlers eventually arm themselves and engage in a desperate battle against the mercenaries. After a bloody conflict, the US Army intervenes. In the aftermath, Averill and others are caught in further violence, leading to the deaths of several characters. The film concludes in 1903 with an older Averill on a yacht in Rhode Island.
