The story

Raised at the Megumien orphanage, Sayuri learns she is the daughter of the wealthy Nanjo family, having been accidentally switched with another baby at the hospital. Her biological father, Goro, a biologist, takes her home and tells her that her mother, Yuko, has memory loss following injuries in a traffic accident. Full plot (contains spoilers)

A girl named Sayuri, who grew up at the Megumien orphanage, learns that she is actually the daughter of the wealthy Nanjo family. When she was a baby, she was accidentally switched with another child at the hospital and was therefore treated as an orphan. The person who comes to take Sayuri home is her biological father, Goro Nanjo, a biologist. Reassured by the sight of her kind and dignified real father, Sayuri breathes a sigh of relief. To celebrate finding her parents, Tatsuya, a young staff member at the orphanage, gives her a doll. Sayuri beams with joy. Then Goro tells her something troubling: her mother, Yuko, has suffered memory loss as a result of injuries from a traffic accident. With a trace of unease, Sayuri visits the Nanjo mansion. The moment her mother Yuko appears and sees Sayuri, she calls out, “Tamami?” The unfamiliar name only deepens Sayuri’s anxiety. Still, Yuko has prepared a lavish private room for her. And so Sayuri’s new life in what is truly her home begins. Just afterward, a telegram arrives for Goro from Africa. A new species of venomous snake that he had been researching has been discovered. Goro hurriedly sets off on his journey. The only ones left behind are supposed to be Sayuri, Yuko, and Shige, the elderly housekeeper. From the ceiling above Sayuri’s bedroom, a pair of eyes secretly watches her. In fact, the mansion is also home to an ugly girl named Tamami, who was switched with Sayuri and raised as the family’s daughter. One night, Tamami approaches Sayuri with a terrifying expression. Sayuri is frightened by Tamami’s chillingly cold hands. But this is only the beginning of an even greater horror…
