Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film is a relationship drama about the newlyweds Hedda and Jorgen Tessman. They have just returned from their honeymoon and moved into their enormous villa in the woods, overlooking the valley. The renovation work is not yet finished, and Jorgen has clearly run out of money. That will soon change if he takes up the position of senior physician after Professor Dr. Brack. Jorgen wants no competition for the position, not even from Eilert Lövborg, his rival and Hedda’s former lover. When Jorgen and Hedda host a dinner party for Professor Brack, Eilert and Thea (Jorgen’s ex-girlfriend) unexpectedly turn up as uninvited guests. Over the course of the evening, many complications among the five people come to light. Old wounds are reopened, and a web of love, guilt, and betrayal is revealed. The night ends in failure, and the next day two people are dead.
