A conventional businessman’s conference trip to Sylt draws him into a sensual artistic scene that tests his established principles.
The story
Walter Bergmann, a successful, respected middle-aged businessman with a wife and daughter, travels to Sylt for a conference. On the flight, he meets Renate, a blonde woman who could be his daughter; once on the island, he falls for her. Renate introduces him to a fun-loving artistic circle and a sensual world of parties and sexual freedom, far removed from the propriety and conventions that have shaped his life. As Walter encounters the younger group’s more libertine outlook, he finds himself unable to match their ease or abandon his established principles.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Walter Bergmann has, as they say, made it. He is a successful, respected middle-aged businessman, married with a daughter. One day, he has to travel to the North Sea island of Sylt for a conference. Once there, his life, shaped by propriety, conventions, and formalities, soon starts to unravel. Sin lurks everywhere—parties, pretty girls, and sexual excesses in the sand. The ever-serious Walter promptly falls in love with a statuesque blonde beauty named Renate, whom he had already met on the flight over and who could easily be his daughter. From then on, Bergmann’s world begins to wobble in the face of these temptations. Until now, a model bourgeois philistine in a suit, tie, and pocket square, he finds the fun-loving artistic scene Renate introduces him to—she is sensual and promiscuous—like plunging into a sensual world entirely unknown to him. But Walter quickly realizes that he cannot keep up with these young people’s libertine outlook, nor can he behave with such physical abandon. Then one day, he discovers Renate in bed with one of her various lovers and realizes that her outlook on life and her clique’s sexual freedom will never fit with his principles. Repentant and reformed, Bergmann flies back to his wife and child.
