Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film centers on a lakeside property in Brandenburg near Berlin. The original owner divides the property into two plots and, in the 1920s, sells them to a Jewish textile manufacturer and to an architect, who builds a house in the style of New Objectivity. In the 1930s, the manufacturer wants to flee Germany with his family and sells his half to the architect for a pittance. The architect’s ambitious plans to build a new Berlin together with Albert Speer fall through. After the war, however, he is initially able to make a career in East Berlin. Later, he falls out of favor in the GDR and flees to the West. The house then becomes a refuge for a communist writer couple after their return from exile in the Soviet Union. The couple’s granddaughter would like to take over the house. But with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, things take a different turn. The architect’s heirs demand that the house be returned, and the granddaughter has to leave. In the end, it is demolished.
