The story

In Algeria, Henry Dunant administers the Bourg-Thibourg bank in Haute Kabylie as drought drives settlers into revolt. Though born into Geneva’s upper bourgeoisie, he is troubled by the living conditions of both indigenous people and pieds-noirs, and sets out to build a dam to ease their suffering. To win support, he must present his case to Napoleon III. On the way to Paris, Henry visits his family in Switzerland and learns that his brother Daniel is soon to marry Léonie Bourg-Thibourg, the daughter of Henry’s employer. At a celebration, Henry is struck by malaria and begins convalescing under the care of his grandfather’s medical household.

At a celebration held on the occasion, Dunant collapses, struck by an attack of malaria. While convalescing, Henry is visited by his friend, the journalist Samuel Lowenthal, who tells him that the French emperor is not at the Tuileries but on the Italian battlefields, where he is fighting the troops of Francis Joseph I of Austria...
