A single plot of land is explored through a non-linear narrative spanning from the prehistoric past to the 21st century.
The story
Using a static shot technique, the film explores a single plot of land and its inhabitants across centuries, from the prehistoric era to the 21st century. The narrative is presented in a non-linear fashion, often dividing the screen into panes to show different times simultaneously. The story follows various inhabitants of a specific house, including a man and woman whose lives intertwine over decades. The film utilizes digital de-aging to show characters evolving over time as they inhabit the space, while a recurring hummingbird serves as a thematic thread through the shifting eras of the land's history.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The film begins with dinosaurs and the ice age, eventually transitioning to the land being inhabited by the Lenni-Lenape people. In the 18th century, the land becomes the estate of William Franklin. In the early 20th century, a house is built and inhabited by John Harter and his wife, who dies of the Spanish flu. In the 1940s, the bohemian couple Leo and Stella Beekman live there; Leo invents the La-Z-Boy recliner. In 1945, the Young family moves in, and Richard and Margaret eventually marry and raise a daughter, Vanessa. After various owners and a period of ownership by the Harris family in the 2010s, the house is eventually sold. In 2024, an elderly Richard takes Margaret, who has dementia, to the house to revisit memories. The film ends with a shot of the house from a distance and a final appearance of a hummingbird, followed by a cut scene showing the house flooded in the far future.
