A cautious German insurance employee travels to Thailand to settle his estranged father’s inheritance and confronts a family life in turmoil.
The story
Insurance employee Holger Lenz is unexpectedly given the ashes of the father he has not seen since the end of East Germany, after his father disappeared in Thailand more than twenty years earlier. Holger must travel to Pattaya to claim his inheritance: an apartment. The prospect is daunting, as father and son had little in common and rarely had much to say to one another. At home, Holger also struggles to connect with his 17-year-old gay son, who mocks him online as a dreadful square. The security-minded, conventional Holger is about to embark on an unfamiliar adventure in Southeast Asia.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Insurance employee Holger Lenz is unexpectedly handed the ashes of his father, who disappeared in Thailand more than twenty years ago. He has not seen him since the end of East Germany. Now he is supposed to claim his inheritance, an apartment in Pattaya. The long-distance trip is difficult for him, however, because father and son were worlds apart in their outlook and never had much to say to each other. He has a similar problem with his gay 17-year-old son, who insults him online to his peers as a dreadful square. A very unusual adventure awaits the security-obsessed petit bourgeois from Germany in Southeast Asia, where he will also have to reconsider his relationship with his father, who is in fact only terminally ill. And after returning to Germany amid much confusion, he faces the task of making a fresh start, since his wife has left him for a colleague.
