Full plot (contains spoilers)
Caroline Binder is a perfectionist who has a beautiful home and a happy marriage with her loving husband, Sebastian. However, she suffers from chronic heart failure. Together with her husband, she has built her life around her congenital heart defect. One day, heart specialist Dr. Paul Hoffmann proposes a surgical procedure, which he expects will lead to a full recovery. The operation goes well, Dr. Hoffmann is able to keep his promise, and Caroline is considered healthy. In principle, nothing stands in the way of a carefree life anymore. But Caroline is not happy; she seems unable to leave behind her former life, free of excitement and responsibility and lived at a gentle pace. She becomes moody, irrational, and unpredictable, and after a panic attack and heart palpitations, she turns to Dr. Hoffmann again. He refers her to his colleague, psychiatrist Dr. Erika Pielach. Dr. Pielach tries to convince Caroline that life is worth living and that she has her own happiness in her hands. After Dr. Pielach, who has terminal cancer, throws herself from the hospital roof and dies, Caroline takes control of her life again and returns to work in her original profession as an architect.
