A mix-up over a forged painting sends a broke doctor, an amnesiac successor, and a jealous art forger into a spiraling Berlin farce.

The story

Broke gynecologist Dr. Pröll faces the seizure of his belongings just as his successor, young Dr. Knievel, is due to take over his practice and villa. Pröll’s girlfriend Angela proposes an art scam: her former lover Leo, an art forger, should replace a genuine Piccini painting in Pröll’s home with a copy before the original is auctioned. Meanwhile, Knievel has amnesia and no identification or money. A confusing encounter leaves Leo convinced that his current girlfriend Nina has been unfaithful, and he joins Berlin crook Waruschke in planning a break-in. Nina, mistrusting Knievel’s account of who he is, also heads for the villa, setting several plans on a collision course.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

Gynecologist Dr. Pröll is broke, as the seizure stickers on his furniture and all his other furnishings make impossible to ignore. Then Pröll’s girlfriend, Angela, has a “brilliant” idea. Her former lover Leo is trying to make a living as an art forger and is currently working on a copy of a painting by Piccini. Why not swap it for a real Piccini, which, by a stroke of cinematic coincidence, hangs in Dr. Pröll’s home? To keep the original from going under the hammer, the very reluctant Leo is supposed to break into Pröll’s house and switch the paintings, so that the forgery can fetch a good price as a supposed original while the real one is not lost. There is no time to waste: the very next day, Pröll’s successor, the young Dr. Knievel, is expected to arrive and take over his practice and villa. The young doctor, meanwhile, is suffering from amnesia and has neither identification papers nor money. So it is hardly surprising that Knievel suddenly ends up in bed with Nina, Leo’s current girlfriend. Leo catches the two of them in a compromising situation and (wrongly) assumes that his lover is cheating on him. Furious, Leo leaves his apartment and ends up with Waruschke, a small-time Berlin crook with whom he plans to break into Pröll’s villa. By now, the pretty Nina is planning to do the same, since she does not believe Johannes Knievel—whom she takes for a dine-and-dasher and a con artist—when he tells her his confusing story about the medical practice and the villa he is supposed to move into. When Johannes Knievel cannot get into the Pröll villa with his key, the exasperated Nina promptly calls the police, who are transporting a pregnant woman in their patrol car as part of an emergency. Since Leo, breaking in while dressed in a white coat, is found in Pröll’s villa, he is expected to deliver the baby, although of course he has no idea how. But why is Waruschke also lying in the bed, dressed in women’s clothes and wearing a blond wig? Then the medical assistants, who mistake Leo for the new doctor, Dr. Knievel, and the first patients of the day arrive at the practice, and the general confusion reaches a pitch. Johannes Knievel can do absolutely nothing to clear things up, since he is stuck at the police station without papers and with only a hazy memory. Eventually, a frantic chase ensues across Berlin, in which quite a few people get banged up. By the end, when everything has been cleared up, the three badly battered protagonists—Leo, Waruschke, and Nina—are themselves in need of extensive medical treatment, with their limbs in casts.
