The story
Widowed undertaker Ernst hopes to find a new partner, but his children, Meeri and Luk, keep driving his dates away. Meeri remains attached to her late mother, writing her letters and hiding them in coffins. When she falls for the older Rocco, she discovers that she can fly whenever she sees him or thinks about him. Her friend Klara, then Luk and Ernst, learn her secret and promise to keep it. Meanwhile, Ernst’s pregnant date Charlotte proves difficult for the children to chase off, and Meeri resents her growing presence. As Meeri deals with her unreturned feelings for Rocco, Luk is also struggling with school bullies.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
The widowed undertaker Ernst has been looking for a new woman for some time. His children, Meeri and Luk, however, are against it and have already scared off a date or two. Meeri in particular is still very attached to her mother. She writes her letters telling her about her life, then hides them in the coffins. When Meeri falls in love with Rocco, who is older than her, she is astonished to discover that she can fly whenever she sees him or thinks about him. At first, her best friend Klara finds out, and later Luk and Ernst do too. The four of them swear not to reveal Meeri’s ability. Ernst’s current date, Charlotte, who is pregnant, is not so easily driven away by Meeri and Luk. She also seems unbothered by the corpses in the house. Meeri resents the fact that Ernst’s new girlfriend is now coming over more often. She also has to realize that Rocco does not return her feelings and only wants to be friends; he suggests she spend time with his younger brother, Matti, instead. Luk, meanwhile, is having trouble with bullies from school who repeatedly pick on him, so Meeri has to “fly” to his rescue once in a while. Then old Grete dies too. She had been like a grandmother to all the children. Meeri and her father have an argument because she thinks he told Charlotte about her flying, when in fact Charlotte had seen Meeri fly herself. Charlotte moves out for the time being because of the mounting tension. Ernst finds one of Meeri’s letters in a coffin. In it, she tells her mother that Charlotte is gone now too, and that she hurt Ernst with her words. When Luk follows Charlotte’s car on his bicycle in an effort to keep her in the family, the bullies confront him, and he slides down a slope during the fight. Meeri comes to his aid, but Luk breaks his foot. The family comes together again at the hospital. Charlotte joins them too; Meeri had told her about the accident, since Luk had followed her so that they could become a family again. When Charlotte asks Meeri what she wants, Meeri hugs her. Meeri goes to see Matti, whom she had recently rebuffed when he tentatively tried to get closer to her. They kiss and eventually both start flying. A little later, as everyone celebrates the birth of Charlotte’s baby, Luk too begins to fly when he sees a girl.
