Full plot (contains spoilers)
The tailor and fashion designer Friedrich Himmel has been drafted into the Bundeswehr and is due to serve with the mountain troops. His irresponsible, very young wife, Susanne, chooses this moment to put their baby in his arms because she wants to go her own way and is tired of having a husband and a small child. Faced with this emergency, Himmel can think of no other solution and takes the infant with him to the barracks. The underage new recruit soon causes quite a stir in the Bundeswehr and even disappears for a while. Eventually, the wife of the commanding officer, Major Knorr, takes care of the little one temporarily, and the “baby affair” soon causes a commotion that reaches all the way to Hardthöhe in Bonn. Finally, the remorseful mother returns to her husband, and marital harmony is restored.
