The story

Television advertising-show star Sonja Martens wants to quit the program and end her relationship with her manager, Egon, who is in love with her and repeatedly proposes. She plans to fly from Berlin to Nice, but Egon ends up on the same flight, which makes an emergency landing on an alpine pasture in the Tyrolean mountains. The next morning, woodcutter Toni directs them to a mountain station, where the unexpected visitors are warmly received. Toni’s fiancée, Maria, is troubled when Sonja flatters Toni and he responds, while Maria’s aunt pressures her to make a more advantageous match.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

mini|Large parts of the film are set on an unnamed rack railway—the scenes were filmed on the Achensee Railway in Tyrol. The star of a television advertising show, Sonja Martens, wants to leave the program and break up with her manager, Egon, who is in love with her and constantly proposes to her. She plans to fly from Berlin to Nice, but the flight does not go as planned: Egon ends up on board with her, and they have to make an emergency landing on an alpine pasture in the Tyrolean mountains. The next morning, Sonja and Egon are woken by sheep and found by Toni, a woodcutter who points them toward the mountain station at Kronprinz-Rudolf-Höhe. There, they are warmly welcomed as rare guests. The young Zenzi is especially delighted, since she believes she is a great actress. She wants Egon to discover her for television. Only one person is not pleased: Toni’s fiancée, Maria, already has enough trouble defending her love for the simple woodcutter to her aunt. Her aunt would rather see Maria make a good match, and Maria does not want to disappoint the woman who raised her. Now she sees Toni being courted by Sonja and responding to her flattery. Meanwhile, Loisl has been courting Maria for a long time, but to no avail. When Egon announces at the mountain station’s 75th-anniversary celebration that Toni has signed a television contract with him and will appear in the city with Sonja, Maria, in her despair, accepts Loisl’s marriage proposal. A little later, she flees the village for Berlin and earns her living as a waitress. Toni and Sonja spend lovestruck days in Berlin, but Toni is unhappy away from home and gets drunk more and more often. When he is about to make his first major appearance before an audience, he is drunk and frozen with stage fright. By this time, Sonja has realized that Toni is unhappy and has gone to find Maria. Maria arrives with a large group in traditional dress just as Toni is about to fail onstage. Surrounded by people he knows, Toni manages to get through his performance. Back in his home village, Loisl and Zenzi watch him perform on television together. A little later, Loisl and Zenzi’s wedding takes place. Maria has also returned to her village. Just before the ceremony begins, a plane lands nearby, and Sonja and Toni get out. Sonja hands Toni over to Maria and wishes them both happiness. A little later, Loisl and Zenzi are a married couple, and Sonja and Egon fly away in their plane—with Egon dressed in traditional costume, since he still hopes to win Sonja over.
