A newlywed couple on the brink of divorce unexpectedly reunites on the same bus tour through southern Europe—with their troublesome dog along for the ride.

The story

Young assistant physician Dr. Walter Delius and his fiancée Inge are deeply in love and eager to build a life together. But their wedding day brings trouble: Inge’s large cocker spaniel refuses to accept Walter, making his life miserable and driving a serious wedge between the newlyweds. Their marriage soon seems headed for divorce. Separately, each consults a lawyer and books a bus tour to the sunny south in hopes of escaping their problems. By coincidence, they select the very same journey, which travels through Bavaria and Switzerland to Spain. Inge’s dog joins them, too, leaving the estranged couple to confront their troubles on the road.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

At first, everything seemed to be going so well between the young assistant physician, Dr. Walter Delius, and his enchanting young fiancée, Inge. Their love is great, and their desire to grow old together is even greater. But on their wedding day, dark clouds already gather over their marriage, because Inge’s big dog, a dark-coated cocker spaniel, has it in for Walter. The four-legged creature simply won’t tolerate another male by his mistress’s side and makes Walter’s life hell from the very start. This leads to such a serious rift between the newlyweds that their young marriage heads straight for divorce. Independently of one another, the two young people not only consult a lawyer but, in order to forget all their troubles, each also books a bus tour to the sunny south. To their misfortune, they choose exactly the same trip, which is supposed to take them through Bavaria and Switzerland all the way to Spain. Naturally, the yapping mutt is on board too. Nevertheless, Inge and Walter grow close again during the trip, and even the cocker spaniel gradually begins to accept the new man by his mistress’s side. Finally, they fall into each other’s arms again and decide to give it another try as Mr. and Mrs. Delius.
