The story
In 2000, Nancy, a teacher in the small Midwestern town of Holland, Michigan, lives a stereotypical middle-class existence with her husband Fred, an optometrist, and their 13-year-old son Harry. Due to Fred's frequent absences, Nancy begins to suspect he is living a double life, noting his possession of Polaroid photos despite not owning a camera and his frequent out-of-town conferences. With the help of a fellow teacher named Dave, Nancy begins to uncover the truth about Fred's activities. As romantic feelings develop between Nancy and Dave, the situation takes an unexpected turn with alarming consequences.

In 2000, Nancy, a teacher in the small Midwestern town of Holland, Michigan, lives a stereotypical middle-class existence with her husband Fred, an optometrist, and 13-year-old son Harry. Suspecting Fred of living a double life due to his frequent absences and possession of Polaroid photos, Nancy seeks help from a fellow teacher, Dave. As they grow closer, Dave discovers that Fred is a serial killer after following him to a lake home. Dave stabs Fred, believing he has killed him, and lies to Nancy, claiming Fred simply abandoned the family. However, Fred returns to town during the tulip festival. Nancy and Harry hide at a motel, where Dave reveals the truth and is injured in a scuffle with Fred. Nancy finds Harry with Fred, who wants the family to return to their status quo. During a tense car ride, Nancy creates a distraction by mentioning Harry's seat belt; Harry escapes the car, and Nancy kills Fred in the ensuing scuffle.
