Jeff and Pam McKenzie are struggling to keep their home and are trying to sell it. They believe a valuable doll was stolen by a neighbor's son, Max, who was left home alone by his family. The couple breaks into the Mercer house to retrieve the doll, while Max sets booby-traps to keep them away, fearing they want to kidnap him. During the confrontation, they realize Max didn't steal the doll but a soda, and they agree to let him stay with them. It is later revealed that their own son, Ollie, actually took the doll.
