The story
Chicago housewife Birdee Pruitt's life is upended when her husband's infidelity is revealed during a televised talk show appearance. Humiliated and seeking a fresh start, Birdee and her daughter Bernice move back to Birdee's hometown of Smithville, Texas. There, Birdee must navigate the complexities of her past, her family's struggles, and the unexpected romantic interest shown by a former high school classmate, Justin. As she attempts to rebuild her life as a single mother and reconnect with her parents, she must decide how much of her past to let go and how much of her future to embrace.

After her husband's affair is exposed on a national talk show, Birdee Pruitt moves to Smithville, Texas, with her daughter Bernice. In her hometown, Birdee faces the judgment of former peers and works to reconcile with her parents—her mother Ramona and her father, who suffers from Alzheimer's. She also encounters Justin, a former classmate who expresses romantic interest. The plot follows the girls' adjustment to life in Texas, including the death of Ramona and the subsequent care of her nephew Travis. The conflict peaks when Birdee's ex-husband, Bill, appears at a funeral and asks for a divorce, leading to a heartbreaking realization for Bernice that her father will not take her with him. Ultimately, Birdee begins dating Justin and accepts her new life in Smithville, while Bernice finds peace with her situation and accepts Justin as a father figure.
