Dracula and his son-in-law must journey to South America to reverse a transformation spell before its effects become permanent.
The story
During Hotel Transylvania's 125th anniversary celebration, Dracula plans to retire and leave the hotel to Mavis and Johnny. When Mavis shares this news with Johnny, he excitedly proposes plans to renovate the hotel. To discourage him, Dracula claims a 'monster real-estate law' prevents humans from owning the property. However, things take a turn when Professor Abraham Van Helsing uses a ray powered by a crystal to turn humans into monsters and vice versa. After a mishap turns Johnny into a dragon and Dracula into a human, the pair must travel to the Cave of the Reflexión in South America to find another crystal and restore their original forms.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
During the hotel's 125th anniversary, Dracula plans to retire and leave the hotel to Mavis and Johnny. To stop Johnny from renovating it, Dracula lies about a 'monster real-estate law.' When Professor Abraham Van Helsing uses a 'Monsterfication Ray' to help Johnny, it backfires: Johnny becomes a dragon and Dracula becomes a human. They travel to South America to find a replacement crystal in the Cave of the Reflexión. Along the way, Dracula's friends—Frank, Wayne, Griffin, and Murray—also become human after drinking from a contaminated fountain. While traveling, Dracula and Johnny bond, and Dracula admits his lie about the law. However, the truth about his deception regarding the hotel's ownership causes a rift, and a mutated Johnny flees. Mavis finds him and leads him to the cave. When the ray fails to work on the long-mutated Johnny, Dracula allows himself to be captured by him, declaring him family. This sincerity allows Mavis to successfully revert Johnny to human form. They return home to find the hotel destroyed by Gigi, but Dracula ultimately allows Mavis and Johnny to rebuild it to their liking. One year later, the modernized hotel is shown.
