An indebted hotelier hopes a government grant can save his empty Alpine hotel—but only if it is fully occupied.
The story
Niki Moser borrowed 400,000 marks from the mayor, promising to marry his daughter Marianne, and used the money to buy an Alpine fitness hotel that remains empty. Niki and Marianne like one another, but neither wants to marry, while Niki needs a way to repay the loan. A government grant seems to offer help: he learns it need not be repaid if the hotel is fully occupied. His friend Toni brings hitchhiking Swedish women seeking free lodging, and Marianne arranges for a men’s brass band to check in, bringing more guests to the hotel.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Niki Moser borrowed 400,000 marks from the mayor in exchange for promising to marry his daughter, Marianne. But the Alpine fitness hotel he bought at auction with the money remains without guests. Niki and Marianne like each other, but neither of them wants to get married. Niki looks for a way to pay the money back. His friend Toni tells him about government grants, and Niki writes to Ministerialrat Wiesinger, but for a long time gets no reply. In a phone call, Niki is delighted to learn that he will not have to repay the grant, and that the only condition is that the hotel be fully occupied. Toni brings a group of young Swedish women who are hitchhiking to the hotel. They are happy to get free accommodation instead of staying in youth hostels as they had been doing. Marianne arranges for a men's brass band to check in. Before long, couples form and enjoy themselves together. The bandleader and Marianne do too, which infuriates Niki, who had until then been her platonic friend; he is beginning to realise just how desirable Marianne really is. Meanwhile, Ministerialrat Wiesinger arrives with his companion, Iris, to inspect the hotel, but bad luck follows him: first, a romantic interlude with Iris among the cows in a meadow proves to be a bad idea when one of them unloads its bowels onto his face. Then two new arrivals who have escaped from the nearby Dr. Wirr mental hospital, Max and Franz, steal Wiesinger’s convertible and his and Iris’s clothes. As a result, Franz is mistaken for Wiesinger, while Wiesinger and Iris are mistaken for the escapees and hunted. Eventually, the confusion is cleared up, but Wiesinger exposes the scam involving the hotel’s purported guests, who are not paying, and refuses to pay the grant to the hotel, which strikes him as an erotic club. Even so, Niki, who has by now spotted a business opportunity, offers to pay the money back to the mayor, but the mayor refuses. Niki and Marianne become a couple regardless. Wiesinger, however, gets into a predicament when his wife suddenly turns up; Wiesinger’s jealous secretary has told her that his trip was not solely for official business. He gets rid of his wife temporarily by pushing her into the swimming pool.
