The story
In the future, people’s reputations—and their ability to work and communicate—depend on a Carma Counter. Connected through the Stream by a Finder, they can become virtually invisible if their score reaches zero. Cee, an agent for musicians, is targeted by a smear campaign after an attempted rape, and the campaign threatens her life.

In the future, everyone’s reputation—and thus their ability to work and communicate—depends on a “Carma Counter.” Everyone is connected to the “Stream” through a “Finder,” as long as their Carma Counter is not at 0. Other people’s ratings can raise someone’s Carma Counter, but they can also lower it and, with it, that person’s credibility. People whose Counter is at 0 become virtually invisible to everyone else. Cee (Lorna Ishema) is an agent for musicians. After an attempted rape, she becomes the target of a smear campaign that threatens her life. She eventually discovers that agencies work to improve their clients’ reputations or to drag other people’s reputations down. All ratings are steered to a greater or lesser extent by opinion leaders. Cee hires an agency to defend her and ultimately improve her reputation, but the agency has other clients as well.
