As these various investigations cross paths, a rival nemesis attempts to pull the clients toward a more nihilistic perspective on the meaning of existence.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Albert Markovski, an environmentalist, seeks help from existential detectives Bernard and Vivian Jaffe to solve a mystery involving a recurring stranger. The Jaffes promote a philosophy of universal interconnectivity, introducing Albert to Tommy Corn, an anti-petroleum idealist. However, Tommy becomes dissatisfied and introduces Albert to Caterine Vauban, a former student of the Jaffes who teaches a nihilistic philosophy of 'pure being' and the inevitability of misery. Caterine takes Albert into the woods, leaving a hurt Tommy behind. Simultaneously, Brad Stand, a Huckabees executive, and his girlfriend Dawn Campbell are influenced by the Jaffes, leading them to rethink their lives and reject the modeling world and corporate ladder. The storylines collide when Brad's house catches fire; Tommy saves Dawn, and they fall in love. Albert achieves enlightenment by synthesizing the Jaffes' and Caterine's opposing views. Finally, Albert reveals to a devastated Brad that he started the fire, explaining that all things are inextricably connected through the painful reality of human existence.
