When Rolfi announces a Berlin wedding just a week away, his family rushes to prepare before they have even met his American bride.

The story

The Bundschuh family is already gathered in grief after Gundula’s father dies following years of dementia when her son Rolfi returns from America and announces that he will marry his girlfriend in Berlin the following week. Although his family has not met her, they are eager to celebrate, and Gundula quickly organizes a garden party. She and Gerald reserve thirteen hotel rooms, believing that many guests will travel from America. When Rolfi’s bride, Candy, arrives with only her father and a housekeeper, the family discovers that just three guests have come. At a brunch meant to introduce everyone, the first meeting proves less than harmonious.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

The Bundschuh family is in mourning. Gundula’s father, Edgar, has died after years of dementia. For the occasion, Gerald and Gundula’s eldest son, Rolfi, has also come all the way from America, where he has been studying for several years. Edgar’s widow thanks everyone who came, but makes no secret of the fact that the family is getting on her nerves. In this situation, Rolfi announces that he is getting married here in Berlin next week and that, of course, the family is invited. The Bundschuhs have not yet met his girlfriend from America, but they are keen to celebrate their son’s wedding. His mother, Gundula, promptly organizes a garden party. His aunt Rose is relieved when Rolfi explains that he also plans to have a church wedding in America later. She does not want to drive home with her Hadi just yet, and decides to stay in Berlin until the wedding. Mother Gundula suspects that her annoying relatives will be settling in at her place until then. She will also be left with all the preparations. After bringing out her valuable family china and arranging a large party tent, she and Gerald reserve thirteen rooms at the hotel, since supposedly that many guests are coming from America. The whole family lines up at home to welcome the guests as a white stretch limousine pulls up. To their horror, Rolfi’s bride, Candy, is Black and heavily pregnant, and only three people arrive, not thirteen: Candy, her father Reginald, and his housekeeper, Consuela. Gerald had confused the number of guests with the date of arrival. The whole family meets their guests for brunch so they can get to know one another, but it does not go particularly harmoniously. The mood does not improve over coffee, either. Gundula upsets her mother, her mother-in-law Susanne becomes more embarrassing with every drop of alcohol, and Rose is increasingly smitten with the imposing Reginald. He makes frequent phone calls to someone in America and seems very agitated. Ricarda claims to have heard that the Shoemakers are bankrupt and that Candy is by no means a wealthy match for her brother. Gerald immediately draws up a financial plan with his son and doubts that he, as an ordinary student, can afford the whole thing. That evening, at the pre-wedding party, the mood lifts a little when Gerald and Reginald discover their shared passion for music. Rose also makes the most of the music and spends the entire evening dancing only with Candy’s father. However, at some point when no one is watching, the hedge beside the barbecue catches fire, and the neighbors call the fire department because their shed is destroyed in the blaze. That officially brings the pre-wedding party to an end. The police have also been called because of the noise, and the officers explain that all guests who do not live there must leave the property immediately. So everyone promptly moves to the hotel, since there are plenty of rooms reserved there. Rose now sees fit to sneak into Reginald’s room, while Gerald cannot find his own room and accidentally ends up in bed with his brother-in-law, Hadi. The wedding is supposed to take place the next day. Since not everyone can fit in the limousine, Rolfi rides a scooter to the registry office with the pregnant Candy. Meanwhile, the rest of the party gets the large car stuck at the roadside, so they all have to continue on foot. Gundula ruins her dress in the process, but everyone reaches the registry office on time. Even so, the wedding falls through: after another phone call from Reginald, he and his daughter get into an argument. Rolfi has to realize that he does not actually want to marry Candy. He had fallen in love with her at first sight in America, when the father of her child had abandoned her. Reginald had been trying all along to persuade Candy’s ex-boyfriend to change his mind, and in the end he succeeded. Both families are happy with how the day turned out, because in the end everything is more or less all right. Only Rose seems to have a problem: a few weeks later, she discovers that she is pregnant and wonders who the father of her child could be.
