The story

His beloved tells him she intends to marry someone else, and a rejection letter from a music publisher deepens his despair. At a café, Joep meets gangster Willie, who offers to kill him for 10,000 guilders. Meanwhile, Dorien, whose own work and love life have also gone badly, enters Joep’s orbit. Full plot (contains spoilers)

Joep Meloen (André van Duin) is a piano tuner and composer who is not having much success selling his work. His beloved tells him she plans to marry someone else. Soon afterward, he receives a letter in the mail from the music publishing company. In it, director Peters says that Joep’s composition is the worst thing he has ever heard. From then on, Joep feels that there is nothing left for him and thinks about suicide. However, he cannot bring himself to do it. At a café, he meets gangster Willie, who offers to take his life for 10,000 guilders. Even so, that same night Joep jumps into the canal himself. At that very moment, Dorien (Corrie van Gorp) also jumps into the canal. Like Joep, she has had no success in her work or in love. Hans Hoopman (Frans van Dusschoten), who is involved in all sorts of schemes, sees potential in the two of them and arranges for Joep and Dorien to take part in the National Song Festival. However, all sorts of things go wrong at the festival and in the run-up to it, because Dorien’s ex (Peter Tuinman) and Willie are after them, intent on murdering Joep. To make matters worse, Joep’s landlady is also after him because she thinks he wants to marry her. In the end, Joep and Dorien flee from everything and everyone to start a new life in America.
