Full plot (contains spoilers)

Romolo, a gas-station attendant at the station owned by his wealthy wife, Ines, one day meets Orazio, his former army comrade, who happens to stop there for gas. Orazio persuades him to escape the boredom of married life and live by his wits. The two then begin wandering through various towns in the Italian provinces. During their aimless travels, they meet a girl, Candida, who joins their group. When Romolo, on a bet with a hippie balladeer he has met at a tavern, eats several kilos of raw sausages and dies, Orazio takes it upon himself to bring the terrible news to the widow. Romolo, however, is not dead, but has merely fainted from indigestion. By then, though, it is too late: Orazio has already told Ines of her premature widowhood and gladly accepts her offer to spend the night at her house, ending up married within a few days.
