Full plot (contains spoilers)
Siena, 1600: A centuries-old hatred divides the Montefalco and Della Torre families. To put an end to it, a marriage between Massimo Montefalco and Ines Della Torre is proposed, but a young woman, Fiammetta, flees from a castle to thwart the wedding. In love with Massimo, she disguises herself as the Golden Falcon and tries to cause enough trouble to make the young man appear guilty; sure enough, shortly afterward he is arrested. Ines, however, does not want to give up the marriage, and Massimo is released after a few days. Fiammetta does not give up and gives him a sleeping draught, arranging for him to be found the next morning in the arms of an accommodating young servant. After various twists and turns, however, he becomes convinced of Fiammetta’s love and gives up Ines to marry her. Another groom will be found for Ines, while the elderly Della Torre will marry Gertrude of Montefalco, who has been widowed.
