A doge’s son defies his father’s diplomatic plans to take on pirates under a masked identity.
The story
In seventeenth-century Venice, Manrico Venier, son of the doge, wants to fight the Uskok pirates who plague the Adriatic. His father, however, has chosen a diplomatic career for him. Unwilling to accept that path, Manrico takes action against the pirates anyway, adopting the disguise of the “Lion of Saint Mark” and receiving help from a group of Venetians. The account establishes the conflict between his father’s plans and Manrico’s determination to confront the threat, but gives no further events.
