Full plot (contains spoilers)
Malik, a ruthless pirate, is greatly feared throughout the Caribbean. His latest victim is Captain Navarro, whom Pedro Valverde, captain of a Spanish galleon, spots dying amid the wreckage of his vessel. Navarro reports that he was attacked by Malik, who, he says, is aided in his exploits by information from a woman whose name he does not live long enough to reveal. Upon arriving in Puerto Suarez, Pedro is received by the governor, Don Alvarado, who introduces him to his daughter Blanca and to Alma, a wealthy Creole landowner and the governor’s fiancée. In the days that follow, while Pedro, commissioned by Don Alvarado, begins investigating Malik’s misdeeds and those of his unknown accomplice, he encounters Alma more and more often, and she shows him affection. During a party, Malik attacks the governor’s palace. However, the pirate’s plan is largely thwarted by Pedro’s timely intervention. By then, further government reinforcements have arrived, and all the regular forces converge on Cursed Island, where the pirates have their hideout. In the decisive clash, Alma is unmasked and killed; Malik and his men meet the same fate. After all their trials, Pedro and Blanca marry.
