Four inmates get 48 hours outside prison to confront the lives and choices waiting for them.
The story
Four inmates at a prison in Civitavecchia—Rossana, Angelo, Luigi, and Donato—are granted the same 48-hour leave for good behavior, despite having never met before. Each faces a different life beyond the prison gates: Rossana comes from a wealthy family and has a driver waiting, while Angelo has friends and former accomplices to reconnect with. Donato sets out to persuade his wife's pimp to release her, and Luigi returns home to find his son following in his criminal footsteps. The leave comes with a firm deadline: each must return to prison when the 48 hours are over or be considered an escapee.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Rossana, Angelo, Luigi, and Donato are inmates in the same prison in Civitavecchia, but before now they have never met or known one another. Rossana, a young woman from a wealthy family, is inside for trying to transport 10 kilos of drugs from Brazil when she went there on vacation; Angelo is in prison for armed robbery; Luigi is a longtime criminal with numerous extortions, robberies, and murders behind him; Donato is a former boxer sentenced for his involvement in illegal fights, anxious about his wife, who is forced to work as a prostitute. On the same day, all of them are granted 48-hour leave from prison for good behavior. At the end of it, they must return to prison or be considered escapees. No one is waiting for them outside the prison, except for Rossana, who finds a large black sedan with a driver waiting for her. Unable to find his friends, Angelo asks Rossana for a ride to his home, which he inherited from his grandmother, and she agrees. During the drive, the two young people have a quick sexual encounter. Rossana then has the driver drop her off at home and asks him to take Angelo to his destination. At first, she is sorry not to find her mother at home, as she is attending a work meeting, but when the two see each other again that evening, they argue after the daughter says she intends to flee abroad so she will not have to return to prison. Angelo is dropped off at the address he gave, where his friends and former accomplices are waiting for him. They have prepared a sort of surprise party, and afterward propose a new job that could set them all up for quite some time, after which Angelo would have to go on the run in a foreign country. Once he has left the prison gates, Donato takes a bus to see Sasà, his wife's pimp, and persuade him to set her free. Sasà agrees, on the condition that the former boxer take part in an illegal fight and win. Donato agrees and wins the fight, but when he reminds Sasà to keep his word, Sasà stabs him in the abdomen and reveals that his wife died some time ago. He then orders two of his men to take Donato somewhere isolated and finish him off. One of the men walks a few meters away, while the other, Gaetano, takes pity on Donato and merely pushes him down into a ditch, firing into the air. This effectively gives the former boxer the chance to recover enough strength to return to Sasà and get justice. To do so, unfortunately, Donato is forced to kill Gaetano with a pickaxe before collapsing himself. After returning home by train, Luigi learns that his son Michele, eager to follow in his footsteps, has started dealing drugs on his own in an area controlled by Goran's gang. Goran is an old accomplice of Luigi's. Luigi first manages to persuade his son to stop dealing, then goes to Goran to persuade him not to retaliate against his son and wife. Realizing he has failed, Luigi then persuades Michele and his wife Paola to leave the city for good while he awaits the showdown with Goran, who comes to Luigi and shoots him dead. Meanwhile, after agreeing to the job his friends have planned, Angelo decides to go and see Rossana again. The two spend the night talking, and Angelo suggests that they flee together after the job. Rossana agrees, but in the meantime both begin to have doubts about their plan to flee Italy. In the end, Angelo and Rossana decide to abandon their respective plans and return to prison together, to serve the rest of their sentences and then try to rebuild their lives.
