The story
After a premature cavalry charge wins a battle, Prince Friedrich Arthur von Homburg faces a death sentence for disobeying orders.
Full plot (contains spoilers)
Prince Friedrich Arthur von Homburg sends his cavalry into battle prematurely. Despite the victory, he is sentenced to death for disobeying orders. Terrified by the sentence, the prince loses every semblance of a hero. But when he is offered a pardon, which he feels would be dishonorable, he calmly accepts the sentence. Yet what the prince believes to be an execution turns out to be his own wedding to his beloved Natalia. His dream of glory and love has come true. But his entire drama turns out to have been only a dream brought on by his sleepwalking; in fact, he is awakened in the garden, and the final scene repeats the opening one, but makes explicit that it was a dream.
