Il Provinciale (1971)

Twenty-two-year-old Giovanni moves to Rome from the provinces to pursue a career as a journalist, but the experience is disappointing because no newspaper is interested in hiring him. Giovanni settles for working as a gas station attendant and mechanic at a service station. One day, as he is walking down the street, he is hit by a luxury car. Giulia, a beautiful and very elegant young woman, gets out and takes him to her home; before long, they begin a love affair. Naive and inexperienced, Giovanni still has not figured out what the young woman does for a living after a month of dating. Sincerely in love with Giovanni, she explains that she is a prostitute, something she has never hidden. She tries to change her life for the sake of their relationship, but the difficulty of finding work and their financial hardships make life difficult for her. When a beautiful young woman named Silvana enters Giovanni’s life, and he seems to have a good friendship with her, Giulia decides to leave without telling anyone, so Giovanni can build a life with a girl who is right for him and she can resume her old life somewhere else.
