Full plot (contains spoilers)
Cheeseburg, 1988. Popular show host Willi Wunder has checked into the “Himmel” Hotel with his team for a live show. His biggest fan is Mimi Schrillmann, who dreams of becoming his assistant. Her mother Erika, a former figure skater who now scrapes by as a restroom attendant, wants Mimi to become an ice princess instead. After Wunder’s assistant Beate falls to her death from the roof of the “Himmel” Hotel—a fall caused by manager Raffo—the search for a replacement begins in earnest. Mimi’s neighbor, Mrs. Sommer, is determined to get her daughter Elke the job and eliminates all the potential rivals. But when Elke is sidelined by an accident, Mrs. Sommer gets herself a place in the show instead—though only as a contestant in a quiz game. Mimi’s chances seem next to none, since she has an additional handicap: ever since Willi Wunder decapitated his sister with a pair of scissors as a baby, he has been traumatized by girls with “thick braids.” Mimi has blonde braids, but ultimately manages to cure Willi, and at the end she really is standing onstage with him.
