After Anna Lobrecht confesses to killing her former psychologist, an investigator finds evidence that complicates her account.

The story

On the night Christoph Schäfler is murdered, Anna Lobrecht turns herself in and confesses to killing her former psychologist. Detective Inspector Irene Radek finds a psychiatric report written two years earlier by forensic psychiatrist Karla Eckhardt, who had diagnosed Anna as a compulsive liar with borderline personality disorder. Anna says Eckhardt misjudged her and refuses to speak with the doctor assigned to her, insisting on speaking only with Eckhardt. Phone data places Anna’s mobile near her mother rather than the crime scene, and her mother confirms Anna was with her. The investigation also points to Martin Heller, a violent former psychiatric nurse who had fallen in love with Anna.

Full plot (contains spoilers)

A man is beaten to death on a riverbank. On the very night of the crime, Anna Lobrecht turns herself in to the police and confesses to murdering Christoph Schäfler, her former psychologist. Detective Inspector Irene Radek finds a report about Anna Lobrecht in the files, written by forensic psychiatrist Karla Eckhardt. Two years earlier, Eckhardt had diagnosed Lobrecht as a compulsive liar with borderline personality disorder. Radek therefore gets in touch with Eckhardt. According to Lobrecht, Eckhardt had judged her wrongly back then. Nevertheless, she does not want to speak with Dr. Lorenz Lodenscheidt, who has been assigned to her, and will speak only with Eckhardt. Analysis of the mobile-phone data shows that Anna Lobrecht’s phone was not near the crime scene at the time of the murder, but was logged in near her mother Margarete. Margarete Lobrecht confirms that her daughter was with her all day. Schäfler’s body was found near the hydroelectric power station where he and Lobrecht had often met. The evidence points to Martin Heller, a violent offender with a criminal record. He had been a psychiatric nurse while Anna Lobrecht was a patient. Heller was suspended after physically attacking a colleague following a dispute over Anna. Martin had fallen in love with her. His mobile phone was also logged in near the crime scene at the time of the murder. But according to his sister, Sylvia Heller, her brother was with her then. While Radek is speaking with Sylvia Heller, her brother Martin manages to escape. Christoph Schäfler was murdered on the anniversary of the death of Anna Lobrecht’s father, who died in a fire. Martin Heller had called Anna Lobrecht from the Danube riverbank at the time of the murder. Anna says she felt guilty and confessed to the crime for that reason. She believes Heller committed the murder. The fugitive Martin Heller lies in wait for Karla Eckhardt in her stairwell, wanting to tell her something because the police would not believe him. During the encounter, her companion Péter Sándor falls down the stairs and is taken to hospital. Radek believes Martin Heller is the culprit, especially after the shoeprints at the crime scene are found to match his. As far as she is concerned, the case is closed, and Lobrecht is released after the medical officer authorizes it. Martin Heller visits Karla Eckhardt again and insists that he did not murder Schäfler. He also says that he called Anna, but the voice on the other end was not hers. Acting on Radek’s instructions, Eckhardt has been placed under surveillance, and the police arrest Martin Heller when he meets with her. Eckhardt visits Martin Heller in prison and plays him a recording of Margarete Lobrecht. From the sound of the voice, Heller confirms that on the night of the murder he spoke on the phone with her, not Anna. Eckhardt also discovers that Anna’s father, Pastor Schorn, was autopsied at the time because he was suspected of arson. Schorn had suffocated in the fire. Margarete Lobrecht had been Schorn’s housekeeper, but he cast her out after she wanted to keep his child. Eckhardt suspects that Anna had given her mother a false alibi back then and, in return, has now received a false alibi from her. Anna Lobrecht takes Eckhardt captive and confesses to her that she murdered Christoph Schäfler. Anna believes she was to blame for her father’s death, and that she might have been able to save him back then. Margarete Lobrecht manages to alert the police before hanging herself. Anna is ultimately arrested by the police for Christoph Schäfler’s murder.
